TECHNICAL INSIGHT

Storing, Handling and Installing Intumescent Materials

Practical storage, handling and installation notes drawn from supplied manufacturer literature for strips, boards, inserts, tapes and grilles.

General rules

Keep products dry, away from direct sun, heat and open flame, and clear of acids and alkalis. Do not stack heavy loads on soft products. Inspect stock before use.

Temperature and shelf life

Literature figures include roughly 0–30 °C for graphite strips and rods (2-year shelf life stated), 5–30 °C for phosphorus boards, 5–35 °C for ceramic-fibre strips (2 years stated) and 5–30 °C with humidity ≤ 65% for grilles.

Boards and inserts

Store 100 / 104 boards and flat inserts horizontally; loaded products deform. Keep the vinyl film on inserts — it improves environmental resistance and does not need removal.

Tapes and strips

Clean the glass and frame before fixing ceramic-fibre tape; cut with scissors or a sharp knife; press firmly to remove gaps; replace worn or tack-weak tape.

Boards and grilles

Cut coated boards on a soft pad and re-coat the cut edge; fit CS195+ tightly to the protected area; inspect grilles regularly and replace damaged casings.
