TECHNICAL INSIGHT

Light Steel Housing: System Components Explained

How a light steel house is put together: framing, wall, roof and floor systems, sheathing, insulation, membranes, roofing and drainage.

Framing

Cold-formed C and U sections from galvanised or aluminium-zinc coated steel, 0.8–3.0 mm thick. Load-bearing studs are generally spaced at 610 mm; wall web widths of 89–140 mm and floor trusses 300–400 mm high are typical in the supplied literature.

Wall, roof and floor systems

The house is organised into wall, roof and floor systems. Wall thickness is 140–200 mm, compared in the literature with 280–350 mm for brick-and-concrete walls.

Sheathing and boards

OSB (9 / 12 / 18 mm) forms the structural skin; fibre-cement and calcium-silicate boards finish exterior and interior surfaces; fibre-cement wood-grain siding gives a timber look.

Insulation and membranes

Glass wool (100 mm, foil-faced) and XPS boards insulate; SBS self-adhesive membrane and breather membrane manage water and vapour.

Roof and drainage

Bitumen shingles (four colours), roof angles and a colour-aluminium gutter system complete the envelope.

Connectors and fasteners

Hold-downs, tension straps, wind-bracing and joist connectors tie the frame together; fasteners range from M3.5 screws to M16 chemical anchors.
