TECHNICAL INSIGHT

Intumescent Materials Explained

How intumescent strips, rods, boards, inserts, mesh, grilles, glazing tapes and pads differ, and where each is used.

What “intumescent” means

An intumescent material swells when heated, forming an insulating char or foam that closes gaps, protects other materials and limits the passage of flame, smoke and heat. Expansion ratio, expansion pressure and the form of the product decide where it can be used.

Seals for gaps and perimeters

Graphite intumescent strips and rods are flexible and cut to length; they are the usual choice for door and window perimeters, cable penetrations and curtain-wall joints. Phosphorus-based sheets protect hardware such as lock cases and hinges and seal edges of larger components.

Cavity and profile filling

Round and flat intumescent inserts fill the cavities and grooves of uPVC, aluminium, steel and polyurethane profiles in fire-rated window and door systems. Insulating intumescent boards (100 / 104 series) can be cut or punched into custom shapes for the same purpose.

Boards for openings and cable routes

CS195+ composite board and coated fire protection board are rigid boards used for cable trays, trenches, pipes and partitions. The ventilation mesh wraps cable bundles and lets heat disperse in normal use.

Ventilated openings and glass edges

Intumescent ventilation grilles keep an opening ventilated until a fire closes it. Ceramic-fibre tape and glazing pads cushion and insulate fire-rated glass at the frame.
