TECHNICAL INSIGHT

Anatomy of a Fire-rated Window Assembly

The components that make up a fire-resistant window — profile, glass, intumescent materials, gaskets, glazing pads and hardware — and why they must match the test.

A window rating describes a tested assembly

A fire rating applies to a specific combination of profile, reinforcement, glass, intumescent materials, gaskets, hardware and installation. Changing the glass, thickness, hinge or gasket can invalidate a test result.

The profile

The uPVC 82 profile is a seven-chamber, three-seal system with an intumescent cavity in the sash, three interlocking strip grooves and SS304 fire strips at the opening joint; steel liners and steel glass clips support the section.

Intumescent materials

Round and flat inserts and 100 / 104 boards fill cavities; graphite or flat strips seal perimeters; fire gaskets are used at the glass and opening seals. Quantity and position follow the tested drawing.

Glass and glazing support

Fire-rated glass is cushioned by ceramic-fibre tape and supported on rigid glazing pads at the sill; the supplied literature describes glass options of 36–51 mm for the uPVC 82 series.

Documents to request

Ask for the test report or certificate that names the product, size, glass, hardware and installation; the report holder; the issue and expiry dates; and any manufacturer’s installation instructions.

Questions, answered.

Can I assemble my own fire window from JoyHaus materials?

Only if the assembly you build matches a tested design. Ask us which tested configurations are documented for your profile series.
